The backbone is an amazing instrument. It is the connection between our upper and lower skeletons, it houses the spinal cord, it supports the weight of our body and it does all of this while still maintaining enough flexibility to allow for a tremendous range of motion.
The spine is able to do all of this, in part, due to the flexible disks that reside between the hard, bone vertebrae. Just as the backbone is the central column of the skeleton, the disks can be thought of as the shock absorbers that allow them to join without damaging each other.
The disks are filled with fluid that helps maintain flexibility. When the back is wrenched in an accident, the disks may rupture and lose fluid. That fluid acts similarly to the hydraulic fluid one finds in a shock absorber. Depending on how much fluid is lost, the disk may fail or it may cease to offer protection to backbones and spinal cord.
When a disk herniates, bulges or ruptures it may cause limitations to the functionality of the skeletal system. If the disk is bulging inward it can put pressure on the spinal cord itself, which may cause very serious damage to the nerves that comprise the spinal cord.
